GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

Sir,

With reference to your despatch No.333 of
(2), the 31st August, 1933, on the subject of the British
Empire Fair held in Hong Kong in May last, I have the
honour to enclose a press account of the opening
ceremony and to inform you that I have little to add to
the very full report by the Honorary Secretary which is
referred to in your despatch.
2.
A repetition of the Fair in 1934 is still
under consideration.
The Committee has raised the
question of a grant from Government and has been
requested to ascertain the views of the Hong Kong General,
and Chinese Chambers of Commerce in the first instance
on the points at issue. The matter of a site presents
some difficulty, and there has been some discussion
regarding the relative advantages of an Empire, and an
Anglo-Chinese Fair. The latter is favoured in some
quarters on account of the reluctance of the Hong Kong
Chinese to provide occasion for possible hostile
propaganda on the part of their commercial rivals in
Canton should they take part in a purely British
Exhibition. I enclose for your information copies of
circular letters addressed to exhibitors at the 1933 Fair
which set out clearly the points at issue.
3.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
SIR P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER, G.B.E., M.C., M.P.,
